If you know the original, you will very likely be disappointed by this film, which suffers from a poor plot and a messy screenplay – it’s a big, high-energy movie mess.
The biggest problem is that, unlike the original, it lacks likable characters
Adam and Barbera were established early on and were the catalyst for what was to follow. The 2024 version has no such characters, meaning the catalyst is missing and with it any reason for the audience to buy into and care about superficial characterizations, with the possible exception of Bob. There are no “moments” in the 100-minute presentation, nothing with the potential to become classic, quotable scenes, unlike the original, which was peppered with them.
Maybe you can take something away from the film, and I really hope that’s the case, but lower your expectations before the lights dim
Keaton, Ryder and O’Hara are all criminally underused and struggle with a poor script that kept my theater silent the entire time and caused an equally quiet shuffling as people filed out the doors.
