Narrative
On an island of haves and have-nots, teenager John B
enlists his three best friends to hunt for a legendary treasure tied to his father’s disappearance. Chase Stokes, Madelyn Cline, and their “OBX” co-stars quiz each other on the best lines from their popular Netflix series. It was filmed on location in Charleston, South Carolina; it was originally supposed to be filmed in Wilmington, North Carolina.
So what’s not to like!?
Featured in MsMojo: Top 10 Netflix Original Teen Shows (2020). After watching all 3 seasons of Outer Banks, I can’t deny that I was entertained and entertained: all the episodes are packed with fast-paced adventures, treasure hunts, and bad guy chases, all set in exotic locations, and with a few romantic entanglements between the attractive young cast. Well, I have some reservations, too.
And stupid nicknames, of course, like JJ and Pope and John B (what’s the B for, anyway?)
The things that happen are all extremely far-fetched and unrealistic: how this group of teenage friends repeatedly manage to escape from under the noses of the police or heavily armed criminals, often in a hail of bullets but always unharmed; or how they solve baffling mysteries (like treasures hidden for centuries or the location of the legendary El Dorado) in the blink of an eye, or thanks to unexpected strokes of luck. The young cast is obviously supposed to illustrate the importance of true friendship, but their childish behavior gradually gets on your nerves, with all the bro’ing and dude’ing and the inevitable backwards baseball caps. They all look good, but the acting is barely adequate, with only Drew Starkey really standing out as the troubled Rafe, and Rudy Pankow being quite convincing as the enterprising ADHD-addled JJ.
It’s actually more of a teen series, hardly rising above the realms of The Hardy Boys or Nancy Drew
Maybe, as a fairly adult, I shouldn’t watch it at all, but hey, sometimes it’s nice to go with the easy, enjoyable flow without thinking too much. The last scene of season 3 has set the stage for another season, I bet I won’t be able to resist it. Again…
